Account of early life in Hungary to 1905; arrival in New York, 1905; work in garment industry in New York from 1911; her career in the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union from its inception, with comments on communist infiltration, union organization on the west coast, especially in San Francisco, problems with Negro and Chinese ethnic groups; appointment as vice-president of the union, and initiation of health, education, retirement and welfare benefits for the union; observations on national and local politics, and her activity in the Olson campaign; her interest in compulsory health insurance; and her work on the U.S. Manpower Commission. Dr. Corinne Lathrop Gilb was born in Lethbridge, Alberta to American parents. She moved with her family to Washington State at the age of eight, and received a B.A. from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. at Radcliffe College. She married Tyrell Gilb in 1945. After teaching at university level for 37 years, she retired as Professor Emeritus from Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich., in 1994.
